Managing interpersonal relationships
Collaboration, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and goodwill, is at the core of all effective teamwork. Psychological safety â the perception of team members that they can raise concerns and be listened to, can admit mistakes without being punished and can be generally open towards colleagues and leaders â is closely associated with both quality and quantity of learning and with performance (Edmondson, 1999). However, the coach's role is about more than helping people get along with each other; it is about helping them develop the capacity to achieve more by being more effective in the way they work together. The scope of coaching intervention therefore includes:
⢠The norms of behaviour.
⢠How people communicate within the team and to outsiders.
⢠How they learn together.
⢠How they cope with setbacks and disappointments.
⢠How they recognize and manage conflict.
We have chosen just two areas to explore here, although it is probably the areas in which team coaches have the greatest choice of technique and approach.
